We stepped in immediately on the first day of the lockdown. In every area we formed teams of Tmm’s volunteers, calling them Tmm Corona Warriors. These brave young girls and boys showed exemplary courage at a time when not a soul entered the slums. They went from home to home explaining the importance of social distancing, hand washing, and staying at home. They faced the ire and abuse of frustrated slum residents but did not give up. We got them to work with the local police of the areas, so that lockdown could be enforced with humane treatment. We began a massive hunger relief operation by procuring grocery kits containing wheat flour, lentils, oil, salt, curry powder, tea leaves, sugar, and soap. Hundreds of grocery bags were sent all over the working area of TMM, and the Tmm Corona Warriors distributed them at home to the poorest and neediest families.
The Prime Minister of India announced a complete national lockdown from midnight on March 24, 2020. This sent our working area communities into economic and financial shock, people don’t have money to maintain their families, street children, beggars, migrate workers, daily wage workers, poor families don’t have the income they cried for food and help. In this situation, TMM every day cooking preparing meals at the working area with the help of volunteers and packs then distributed to needy people.
TMM began investing in this urgent and critical movement by conducting primary research and assessing needs on the ground. There is a dire need to address the vaccine hesitancy and mobilize communities to camps. For the last 25years, TMM has been committed to serving the most vulnerable communities in Rajavaram, Andhrapradesh where 80% of its population is under the poverty line. With support from donors like you, we have been able to respond to the most pressing need of basic medicines required to treat COVID-19 patients and deliver 1000 medicine kits consisting of the most essential medicines required to treat the symptoms of COVID-19 in-home care. This has further enabled the army of ASHA and ANMs who work within the communities and visit families to effectively respond and stop the spread of the virus.
Adult literacy program Illiteracy is a major roadblock to development, often resulting in the dis-empowerment of vulnerable communities. Illiterates are unable to read any signs, health warnings and obtain the benefit of government services and programs. They often fail to see the value of education for their own children resulting in the perpetuation of the poverty cycle that afflicts most illiterates. Theressa Mahila Mandali working on the Adult Literacy Project with the financial support of Literacy India Trust, Chennai. After the lockdown, we started this program at five tribal mandals in 20 villages of the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.
The Adult Literacy overcome this roadblock Program is a development project through provides quality literacy that aims to programs to disadvantaged communities in urban slums and remote rural areas. Pilot programs have indicated that basic adult literacy has created personal empowerment and awareness amongst pilot group beneficiaries. This has in turn resulted in a paradigm shift amongst the beneficiaries of the pilot programs who now see the value of educating their children.
The organization has arranged periodical checkups by involving doctors / Nurses / Volunteers specialists from Government Hospitals and Medical Distributors and Medicines for immediate relief were distributed. Illiteracy, lack of awareness, Negligence, Mythic, and Misconception are the reasons for the Tribal/Backward people’s misery in getting attacked by dreaded diseases like aids. The organization has conducted General Awareness Camps in Tribal/SC/BC colonies to educate the people about the consequences and the precautions to be taken. The organization has distributed condoms to Sex workers identified on Highways who are the sources of spreading AIDS and conducted camps to bring awareness about the velocity of the problem and the gravity of the situation prevailing in the present day.
